PHOENIX, AZ (Tucson News Now) - Do you have something you left in a safe deposit box? Now might be a good time to claim it, as the Arizona Department of Revenue is holding a public auction for unclaimed property from dormant safe deposit boxes.

The auction will take place on Friday, Dec. 14 at Sierra Auction at 3570 Grand Avenue in Phoenix starting at 11 a.m.

According to AZ Dept. of Revenue there will be a variety of items available from jewelry and precious metals to vintage currency as well as other miscellaneous items.

There are two ways to bid, in person at the event and online via www.sierraauction.com; online bids can be placed before the auction begins starting at 8 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 12 to 5 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 15.

Proceeds from the auction are transferred to a custodial account, according to AZ Dept. of Revenue, and will remain available to their rightful owner for claiming.

Every year the AZ Dept. of Revenue's Unclaimed Property Unit returns millions of dollars in unclaimed property to the rightful owner every year. According to AZ Dept. of Revenue the highest total ever - $64.3 millions was paid out to claimants from July 1, 2017 to June 30, 2018 (fiscal year).

The department returns property to owners who provide documentation showing their right to claim the property.

People must include with their claim form a valid photo ID, like a driver’s license or other applicable identification, and documentation linking them to the owner’s last known address, as reported by the company that filed the unclaimed property. Claimants also must provide documentation demonstrating a legal right to claim any property listed in another name.
