Arizona has one of the nation’s highest depression rates according to a study

TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) - According to a study done by USA Today, Arizona ranks as a state with some of the highest depression rates in the country.

Rates of major depression were measured in each state across the country in 2017. Researchers from the University of Washington’s Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation concluded that Utah had the highest overall depression rate with 3,977.6 people per 100,000 in population. Arizona came in 10th place at 3,391.9. Among the states in between are Nevada, New Mexico, Wyoming, Montana, Idaho, West Virginia, Arkansas, and Oklahoma.

Depression rates are rising. An estimated 6.7 percent of the U.S. adults experienced at least one episode of major depression in 2016, according to the National Institutes of Mental Health. About one in six Americans suffer depression in their lifetime. People with cancer, diabetes, heart disease, stroke, and Parkinson’s disease are more likely to experience depression.
