TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) - Girl Scout "cookie season" set to begin soon in southern Arizona.
On Saturday, Jan. 12, the Girl Scouts of Southern Arizona will take over the McKale Center at the University of Arizona to kick off the beginning of their annual cookie selling season.
The event is open to all Girl Scouts in southern Arizona and is an opportunity for the girls to celebrate the start of cookie selling and earn their Cookie Activity Pin, by participating in a variety of activities.
According to a recent news release from the Girl Scouts of Southern Arizona after the cookie festivities the girls will stay on to cheer the UA Women's Gymnastics team.
“Through the Girl Scout Cookie Program, girls are doing much more than selling a box of cookies,” said Girl Scouts of Southern Arizona CEO Debbie Rich, in a recent news release. “The program is a powerful entrepreneurship incubator for our next generation of female leaders. Today’s cookie sellers learn the skills they will need to be tomorrow’s business leaders, as well as skills like goal-setting, decision-making, and people skills, which professionals in every field need in order to succeed. Girls are also contributing to our community right now, through incredible cookie-powered service projects.”
Through the Girl Scout Cookie Program, girls not only discover their inner leadership potential but also use their earnings to power amazing experiences for themselves and their troop, including travel, outdoor adventure, and science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) programming. Many girls put the money toward impactful community projects right here in Southern Arizona, from supporting animal shelters and food banks to working with local and state legislators to change laws.
Do-Si-Dos, Samoas, Savannah Smiles, Tagalongs, Thin Mints, and Trefoils are $5 a box, while the all-natural Girl Scout S’mores and gluten-free Toffee Tastics are $6 a box, covering the additional cost of bakery production. 100 percent of the proceeds from the Cookie Program stay here in Southern Arizona to support local Girl Scouting and the Girl Scout Leadership Experience through council-sponsored programs, events activities, and scholarships for girls, as well as cookie rewards, like summer camp.
Cookie sales for the Girl Scouts of Southern Arizona run from Saturday, Jan. 19 to Sunday, March 3.
