Sunnyside's 1st wrestling champs come home

TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) - Sunnyside High School honored the first of their state-record 31 championship wrestling squads on Wednesday night at the Blue Devils Gymnasium.

The 1978-79 team, led by two-time state champion the late Eddie Urbano, paved the way for a dynasty that has produced more team titles than any school in the state of Arizona.

The Blue Devils 31 state championships are 20 more than their next closest competitor Winslow High School.

Sunnyside won 14 straight state championships between 1998-2011.

They took eight in a row (1981-88) under Don Klostreich who engineered that first title.

The Blue Devils have produced six 4-time individual state champions (Nick Gallick, Matt Lopez, Mike Moreno, Kyle DeBerry, Kory DeBerry and Roman Bravo-Young).

Young, who is currently wrestling at Penn State, finished his prep career last spring undefeated (182-0).

The Blue Devils entered this season as the reigning Division I state champions and are the favorites the win a 32nd state championship.
