Sierra Vista Mayor’s Arts and Humanities Awards winners announced

SIERRA VISTA, AZ (Tucson News Now) - Sierra Vista Mayor Rick Mueller and the Sierra Vista Arts and Humanities Commission are proud to announce the winners of the 2018 Mayor’s Arts and Humanities Awards.

A selection committee formed of members of the Arts and Humanities Commission determined the winners based on nominations received from the public.

The winners will be recognized at an awards reception on Sunday, Jan. 27, at 3 p.m., in the Cochise College Student Union Community Room. The reception is free and open to the general public.

“These winners deserve recognition for making Sierra Vista a more vibrant place to live. Their work in the arts and humanities has touched countless people and enriched the community we call home,” Sierra Vista Mayor Rick Mueller says.

2018 Mayor’s Arts and Humanities Awards Winners

  • Visual Arts  Individual – Robert Faust, a volunteer  who completed a mural project at Colonel Johnston Elementary School 
  • Visual Arts  Group – Mike Foster, who makes videos highlighting nature,  culture, and history in our area including the San Pedro River
  • Performing  Arts Individual – Edwin Deleon, a member of  the Sierra Vista Symphony Orchestra, the Sierra Vista Community Band, and  the Desert Swing Band
  • Performing  Arts Group – Sky Island Chamber Society,  which hosts four free community concerts each year
  • Support of  the Arts Individual – Maryann Hockstad, community  liaison for Kino Hall, former Arts and Humanities Commission member, and a  coordinator of the Community Hymn Festival
  • Support of  the Arts Corporation/Organization – Sulphur Springs Valley  Electric Cooperative, a longtime supporter of many area events and  programs
  • Arts in  Education Individual – Ashley Ricks, founder of  community choir non-profit organization Sierra Vista Sings
  • Arts in  Education Group – Joyce Clark Middle School  Jazz Band, which participates in and supports many community events
  • Humanities  Individual – Jennifer Dorris, a volunteer  music teacher at Village Meadows Elementary School and advocate for  bringing the arts into schools
  • Humanities  Organization – Honor Flight Sierra Vista  Group, which has conducted extensive efforts to honor Sierra Vista  veterans over the last 10 years
