Space shuttle Atlantis lands for final time

By Julie Steigerwald - email

CAPE CANAVERAL, FL (KOLD) - Space shuttle Atlantis is back on Earth, and its flying career is over.

Atlantis and its six-man crew landed at Florida's Kennedy Space Center on Wednesday morning.  It marked the end of Atlantis' 25 years of service, logging more than 120 million miles in 32 flights.

This final mission to the International Space Station was a successful one.  The astronauts added a new compartment and fresh batteries to the space station.

Also on board space shuttle Atlantis with the astronauts were inspiring pieces of art from a program based right here in Tucson.  'Beads of Courage' traveled on the shuttle during the mission as well.  Beads of Courage brings hope to children battling serious illnesses.  Every child in the program receives a glass bead along each milestone of their treatment.  NASA astronauts took some of the Beads of Courage with them.

Only two shuttle missions remain, by NASA's two other spaceships.
