LAS VEGAS (KOLD) - A soaring bypass bridge is opening above the Colorado River near Hoover Dam after nearly eight years and $240 million worth of work.
Federal Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood, Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid are among federal and state officials expected for a Thursday morning dedication at the 1,900-foot span.
The bridge links Arizona and Nevada.
It's named for former Nevada Gov. Mike O'Callaghan and Pat Tillman. He's a former NFL player who quit the Arizona Cardinals to join and Army Rangers and died in Afghanistan.
The bridge and a 3 1/2-mile U.S. 93 bypass will cut travel time between Las Vegas and Phoenix.
Cars were previously routed more than 6 miles to cross the dam, and had to stop at checkpoints.
