UPDATE: Police investigate suspicious device

By Sarah Sanchez- email

TUCSON, AZ (KOLD)- Traffic was open and residents of an east side apartment complex were allowed to go home after a suspicious device was deemed safe Sunday afternoon.

The device was found at a bus stop on Golf Links Road near Mann Avenue shortly before Noon by an American Traffic Solutions employee who had just finished doing photo radar traffic enforcement in Tucson Police Department's van.

It appeared to be a pipe wrapped in aluminum foil and duct tape, the ATS employee said. He called 911 to report it.

Between 15 and 20 apartments, located at 6710 E. Golf Links Road, were evacuated as a precautionary measure, Tucson Police Department spokesman Sgt. Matt Ronstadt said.

TPD's Explosives and Hazardous Devices Detail responded to evaluate the item, Ronstadt said.

"The item appears to have been composed of a small number of fireworks that had been bundled together and wrapped with tape," Ronstadt said.

The fireworks were not the type that were recently made legal to sell and purchase within the state of Arizona and would have been illegal to possess, Ronstadt said.

"It is unlikely that the fireworks would have caused significant damage to the bus bench that they were found near, however, they could have posed a personal injury hazard if they had been ignited in close proximity to a person or animal," Ronstadt said.

Tucson Police continue to investigate who placed the items at the bus stop.

No further information was immediately available.
