West Nile Virus Detected In Southern Arizona

(AP)  Health officials detected Arizona's first sign of West Nile Virus Monday.

A single mosquito sample taken by Cochise County health officials tested positive for the virus. The specimen came from the San Simon area near the Arizona-New Mexico border.

Arizona emerged unscathed last year when no signs of the disease were found in either humans or animals.

Last week health officials across the country reported seven people died from the virus. Four of those deaths happened in Colorado. That made Arizona health officials wary the disease could emerge here.

Officials say residents should take precautions against the mosquito-borne illness. Those include eliminating standing water where mosquitoes breed and using insect repellent.
