A Marana mother who knew that her husband had molested their daughter and did not report the abuse will receive five years of probation.
Sixteen year old Katie Sabin committed suicide in April 2004. Marana Police discovered that the girl’s father, Ricky Lee Sabin, had been molesting Katie since she was about eight years old.
Six months earlier, in October 2003, Katie had told her mother, Denise Sabin, about the abuse, which had stopped at that point. Denise said that she did not report the abuse at Katie’s request.
Katie’s grandfather, Edward Horton, who was Denise’s father, had molested Katie when she was seven years old. Denise promptly reported the abuse and Horton went to prison. Six months after his release, he died. The court’s minute entry stated that Katie did not want to see the same thing happen to her father, Ricky Lee.
Ricky Lee Sabin has already been sentenced to about 37 years in prison without parole. He’ll be released when he is almost 80.
Because Denise Sabin cooperated with the investigation, and because of a history of sexual abuse in her family, she will receive five years of probation for her one count of negligent child abuse. She must undergo mental health therapy and not have any contact with Ricky Lee. Upon completion of probation, Denise’s charge will be reduced to a misdemeanor.
At the sentencing, Hon. Nanette Warner said that Denise is receiving five years of probation, but she is already serving a life sentence without her daughter.
