UPDATE: Pima County Deputy Responds To DUI Arrest

By Dan Marries and Millie Martinez, KOLD News 13

Deputy Karl Kapferer has found himself on the wrong side of the law. Early Monday morning, at about 2:30, Kapferer was pulled over by another deputy. After Kapferer failed a roadside sobriety test, he was arrested on drunk driving charges. He was cited and released.

Last year, Deputy Kapferer made headlines after firing his gun at Joseph Egan Junior. Over the fourth of July weekend in 2004, Egan was allegedly driving his car towards another deputy when Kapferer shot at Egan. He wasn't hit but was arrested on a number of charges.

KOLD News 13 went to Kapferer's home on Wednesday. He wouldn't come out to talk to us on camera, but he said: "Twenty years working in law enforcement. I make one mistake and I get hammered."

Kapferer remains on administrative leave pending the outcome of an investigation. His blood alcohol level isn't known yet since he submitted a blood test and authorities are waiting for the results of that test.

A check of court records shows he has several citations for boating violations in Gila County in 2002 and 2003. The Pima County Sheriff's Department says they did a background check before they hired him.
