At Susan G. Komen for the Cure, our mission is our promise, to save lives and end breast cancer forever by empowering people, energizing science, and ensuring quality care for all.
Born in a promise between two sisters – Nancy Brinker to her sister, Susan G. Komen, who died from breast cancer at the age of 36 – Susan G. Komen for the Cure is the world’s largest and most progressive grassroots network fighting to end breast cancer forever.
Started in1999, The Southern Arizona affiliate has been serving the Tucson and Southern Arizona communities by providing funding for international research and local life-saving programs which address education, screening and treatment for men and women who otherwise could not afford it. Our service area includes the six Southern Arizona counties of Pima, Cochise, Graham, Greenlee, Santa Cruz, and Yuma.
Ensuring quality care for all - 75% of the net proceeds stay in Southern Arizona to fund programs that focus on education, screening, treatment and survivorship support.
Energizing Science to find the cure - 25% of net proceeds support the national Susan G. Komen for the Cure Award and Research Grant Program. We have supported virtually every major advance in breast cancer research over the past 25 years. Through Susan G. Komen for the Cure research grant funds, Southern Arizona has seen research monies totaling more than $2 million dollars returned back to our community through grants to the University of Arizona Cancer Center.
Since 1999, we have invested over $5 million in local grants to agencies in our Southern Arizona communities. The monies have benefited local organizations that provide mammograms, treatment, breast cancer prevention and education information, such as TMC, St. Elizabeth’s Health Center, El Rio Foundation and the Arizona Department of Health Services.
We are the community contact for all breast health needs, and we are here for you. From outreach & education about risk factors and early detection of breast cancer, to staffing a local office and resource library for support and information for all those affected by this disease - we are empowering and engaging our community as breast cancer activists and providing local support to families affected by this disease.
