TUCSON, AZ (KOLD) – The earth was almost hit by an asteroid last Friday at around 2PM Tucson time.
The asteroid was discovered by the University of Arizona's Catalina Sky Survey 15 minutes before its closest approach.
Astronomers tell us that the asteroid was the perfect size to create an amazing show if it had entered the earth's atmosphere.
They also say it would not have made it to the earth's surface, as it would have completely burned up on entry.
The asteroid made it to within 14,000km of the earth. That is INSIDE the orbit region of space satellites, known as the Clarke Belt. No word on whether any communication satellites were damaged by the asteroid.
