Rattlesnake vaccine for dogs cheaper than anti venom

(KOLD) - Veterinarians in Denver are selling a rattlesnake bite vaccine for dogs to help limit the risks associated with bites.

The treatment costs between $50 to $70. The vets say standard anti venom treatment can easily cost over $800.

A dog receiving the vaccine gets the initial shot, followed by two boosters several months following the first.

According to manufacturers, the shot stimulates the dogs immune system to create antibodies that neutralize the poisonous venom -- just like a regular vaccine.

Rattlesnake venom can permanently damage pets, veterinarians say.
