This week, Winterhaven residents decided to continue the Festival of Lights despite losing $60,000 in city funding.
The Festival is one of Tucson's most popular holiday traditions. And, it's a great one! Over the years, hundreds of thousands of people have flocked to the neighborhood to see the lights.
But, you can't ignore the economy. At a time when the city is broke and there's a record unemployment rate—sixty thousand dollars to provide traffic and security for a neighborhood for two weeks—just doesn't make sense.
We urge Winterhaven to continue to look for ways to cut costs.
And, unless a Secret Santa comes forward to keep the festival free, we think festival goers should—at least for now—be charged and absorb the cost.
