Giffords heads to Houston on Friday; gets last look at Catalinas

Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords will fly to Houston on Friday to continue her recovery, and you can say goodbye.

The route to the base will be: Cherry Avenue to Helen Street; east on Helen to Campbell Avenue; south on Campbell and Kino Boulevard to Aviation Parkway; southeast on Aviation Parkway to Golf Links Road; and east on Golf Links to the base's Swan Road gate.

Giffords will leave UMC at about 9:15 a.m. with a police escort to head for Davis-Monthan Air Force Base for her 10 a.m. flight to Houston. She is expected to arrive at about 1:15 p.m. Houston time. She will then travel to TIRR Memorial Hospital.

Joining the Giffords on the will be:

  • Mark Kelly, husband
  • Dr. Peter Rhee, UMC trauma surgeon
  • Tracy Culbert, a nurse in UMC's intensive care unit
  • Gloria Giffords, mother
  • Pia Carusone, chief of staff
  • C.J. Karamargin, communications director
