Today was a big day for Tucson, Southern Arizona and the nation. Today, we watched as our Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords left the hospital and made her way to Houston.

To say it's a miracle — is an understatement.

In the end, 19 people were shot, six fatally in the Jan. 8 tragedy. Giffords was shot point blank in the head.

Tucson mourned. But we are a hopeful community, and we held out hope.

In the midst of such a horrible event, Gabby Giffords defied the odds and lived.

You watched it all on live television, on the internet and even your phone.

There were memorials, news conferences . . . and funerals. People brought stuffed animals, candles and balloons to show their support, hope and faith.

And we were rewarded with miraculous news every day.

She opened her eyes.  She gave her husband a neck rub.  She stood. And then she even went out in the sun.

Today our hearts swelled as we watched Gabby leave on the next step to recovery — to rehab in Houston.

This next step represents a victory; something positive in something we'd rather forget.

It's a sign that with "Tucson Together" things will get better.

And, hopefully soon, we'll welcome our congresswoman back to Southern Arizona.
