New Chamber execs reflect needed change

Posted: Updated:

On Wednesday, two executives were named to lead the Tucson Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce.

Mike Varney was named CEO or chief executive officer. He's currently the executive director of the North Las Vegas Chamber of Commerce.

Bill Holmes was named chief operating officer or COO. Holmes is currently vice-president and community relations manager of Wells Fargo here in Tucson.

Varney and Holmes will move into a Chamber that hasn't seen change in decades. Jack Camper will leave the CEO/President position after 33 years. For the past few years, the Tucson Chamber has been losing members, mired in controversy and has a reputation of being anti-small business.

It's time for change in Tucson. It's time to support our businesses and our Downtown. Tucson needs new blood - and it looks like Mike Varney has experience that is desperately needed.

But, probably the best move the board made was to appoint Bill Holmes as COO. Holmes knows, and loves, Tucson. And more importantly, he has been part of our business community.

We wish these gentlemen luck.  It's time to be progressive.
