'Baja Arizona' supporters celebrate own 'Independence Day'

TUCSON, AZ (KOLD) - A different kind of "Independence Day" celebration took place in southern Arizona this weekend.

On Saturday night, a local initiative called "Start Our State" hosted its first annual Baja Arizona Independence Day celebration.

The group is made up of southern Arizonans who want to secede from the rest of Arizona, and create a new U.S. state, potentially named Baja Arizona. Organizers say they're fed up with Arizona's conservative politics, and want to start their own state with a different approach.

The event held at the Rialto Theater included a collection of signatures to get the initiative on the November 2012 ballot. Organizers need at least 47,000 signatures to make that happen.
