Vail goes "batty" to revitalize old post office

A flash mob was held in Vail, outside the old Post Office to help revitalize the building, battered by a microburst on July 4th.

If you saw a group of residents running around with their arms flapping, they had a good reason.

The purpose of the flash mob was to raise awareness about the historic significance of the post office, and a maternity colony of pallid bats that called the building home.

Residents stood outside the post office on Saturday morning with signs reading "this place matters."

Studies indicated the colony of bats living in the building was the second known colony in the region around the Cienega Preserve, the third in Southern Arizona, and one of only seven in the state.

Members of the Vail Preservation Society said they hoped to retain a viable Pallid bat population, while working to restore the Old Vail Post office as a foundation for the fast growing community.

When heavy winds tore the roof off the building on July 4th, the bats were displaced, and were hiding in the crevices between the sub roofing and the walls.  Historians said the bats appeared to be very stressed.

To help the preservation society in their effort, an account was set up at all Pyramid Credit Unions in Tucson, under the Vail Preservation Society name.  You can donate to the "Raise the Roof" account.

The project was also listed among the top thirty, in the Pepsi Refresh challenge.  Historians urged all residents to register to vote, so they could win thousands of dollars for the project.

You can log onto www.vailpreservationsociety for more information about the project.
