Hi Corbett deal great for Tucson, university

Posted: Updated:

The University of Arizona baseball program received a much-needed shot in the arm this week when it reached an agreement with the city of Tucson for the Wildcats to play at Hi Corbett Field.

This agreement seems to be a win-win for everyone.

The UA baseball program is hemorrhaging money, losing about $750,000 last year and averaging only about 800 fans per game. And its baseball field desperately needs upgrades it simply can't afford.

This agreement is a great solution.

Hi Corbett is a big upgrade, with plenty of parking.

And a plus for some fans - beer will be sold at the games. And, if you're wondering, selling alcohol is allowed. Arizona is one of the last in the Pac 12 to start selling beer at some events. And it won't be sold after the fifth inning.

The city gets $250,000 per year - to help make needed improvements to Hi Corbett - and receives sales tax on concessions.

Think about it.

We're in tough times. We need more of this forward thinking between the city and one of our biggest assets - the University of Arizona.
