New high-tech, green dorms await some UA students

TUCSON, AZ (KOLD) - Thursday is move-in day for thousands of University of Arizona college students and there's more of them than ever before.

Residence Life Director Jim Van Arsdel says students are moving into two brand new dorms called Arbol De La Vida and Likins.

He says about 6,700 students will be calling U of A dorms home this year, which is the most ever.

The two new dorms are adding more than 1,000 rooms, but there will still only be about 300 more students.

The university has closed down a different dorm, so it can be renovated and ready for next year.

Van Arsdel says the two new halls were built to support the concept of students living and studying together.

Along with housing, the Arbol De La Vida dorm has conference spacing, where some honors classes will be taught that will link-up students in other countries that are taking the same course at the same time.

They're also sustainable with solar/thermal panels to generate electricity.

The Arbol De La Vida dorm also features a building dashboard, which Van Arsdel says is a TV that shows the building's current use of utilities.

Students are moving in from 8am-3pm Thursday.
