TUCSON, AZ (KOLD) - Preparations are underway for breast health awareness month, which is in October.

It's important to keep in mind that the fight against breast cancer is a year-round battle.

Mammography rates have dropped dramatically in Southern Arizona, said Jaimie Leopold, Susan G. Komen for Southern Arizona executive director. She said it's a crisis situation.

"Early detection saves lives," she said. "There is a 98 percent survival rate when it's caught early."

"Everything we do from the Race for the Cure, Riders for the Cure in El Tour de Tucson, our October breast health awareness month. It's about less talk more action, lets get people into early detection."

The most recent statistics show one in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime.
