Texting ban would force us to be safer drivers

The Tucson City Council is considering a texting-while-driving ban.  We say--bring it on!

Let's be honest here.  Who hasn't sent a text, responded to an e-mail or dialed a phone while driving?  We all know that we shouldn't.  And yet, many of us still do it.

We know it causes distracted driving and can lead to accidents.

It's the reason why nine states prohibit the use of hand held cell phones and another 35 states have some type of text messaging laws. Despite several attempts, Arizona hasn't been able to pass anything.

Our potential ordinance is still being figured out.   But, it would be similar to one in Phoenix:  a $100 fine if you're caught texting while driving and a $250 fine if the texting causes an accident.

Think about it.  It's sad that we have to have a law to get us to do what we know we should do.  But these types of laws have made a difference across the country.  It's a way to force us to put down our cell phones and make our roads safer for other drivers, pedestrians and bicyclists.
