Tucson City Council to review lighting ordinance

Posted: Updated:
TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) -

Tuesday, Tucson City Council will start the discussion on how to light our growing city without blinding the astronomy community. Council member Steve Kozachik is heading the effort.

He's been working hand-in-hand with the Dark Skies Association and a local outdoor sign company, two groups that might normally clash.

The goal is to update the outdoor lighting ordinance already in place to include new technology that can better direct the light, has less spillover, and will save energy.

They also want to address new outdoor signs. They want them to be seen, but with less light pollution.

"This is a community that is really sensitive to protect our astronomy economy investment, and so all this ordinance is doing is catching up the technology with outdoor lighting standards," Kozachik said.

The updated ordinance is geared toward new construction in Tucson. If passed, it would require future businesses and major residential developments to get permits for signs and outdoor lighting.
