ORO VALLEY, AZ (KOLD) - There is a math teacher at Canyon del Oro High School most students won't ever forget.
He makes math fun.
Josh Tabor helps his students solve mysteries.
In his AP Statistics class, he teaches students critical thinking and problem solving skills, things they will use no matter what career they choose.
But he makes it relevant to their lives.
He teaches out of his own book, "Statistical Reasoning in Sports."
He cites examples, "Should we go for it on 4th down? And we talk about that, and we talk about using probability and statistical ideas. And is there a home field advantage? Does it make a difference if you are playing in a dome or not in a dome?
Senior Logan France said, "H likes to make you better at stats and take you to the next level."
It has been awhile since Josh himself walked the CDO campus as a teenager.
He graduated in 1991 and went on to get a degree in math.
"It just seemed natural to come back. I think I had a class in this room. Didn't have a smart board back then. Things have changed a little bit, but some things are still the same."
Like how students really feel about their teachers.
Kristen Pierce admits she has a bit of senioritis, but not in this class.
"A lot of my teachers want to talk the whole time, but when he talks for the entire time, you actually want to listen the whole time because he's really interesting."
Josh tries to mix things up with on the street projects and class demonstrations.
Whatever it takes to prepare his students for the changing world around them.
