TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) - The American Heart Association is inviting the public to participate in the ninth annual National Wear Red Day on Feb. 3.
Go Red for Women said participants can show support for women with heart disease by wearing a red T-shirt to help build awareness.
According to the American Heart Association, more women die from heart disease than any form of cancer.
One in 31 American women die from breast cancer each year compared to one in three women who die from cardiovascular disease, the heart association said.
Approximately eight million women in the U.S. are living with heart disease.
Compared to men, heart disease in women is a silent killer. Less than a third of women in a recent survey reported any type of chest pains or discomfort, all early warning signs, before having a heart attack.
A little more than half of women are likely to dial 911 if they are experiencing any symptoms of a heart attack, while 79 percent of women would call 911 if someone else they knew was having a heart attack, the heart association said.
