Email companies combat 'phishing' scams

TUCSON, AZ (TUCSON NEWS NOW) - Several online companies are joining an effort to battle fraudulent email scams. They're joining an organization called www.dmarc.org.

The organization's goal is to reduce email-based abuse and prevent 'phishing' scams that try to steal passwords, financial information, and addresses from online users.

The aim is to provide a consistent and standardized way for email messages to be determined as authentic or not.

Email providers Google, Yahoo, and AOL have joined the effort. Social networking sites like Facebook and LinkedIn are also involved. Financial firms, including Bank of America and Fidelity Investments, have joined as well. And American Greetings is taking part as well, hoping to combat scams that are disguised as electronic greeting cards sent to unsuspecting consumers.

With many criminals these days using well-known logos to exploit people's trust of established companies, the group says efforts like these are critical to defending as much as possible against fraudulent email messages.
