Marana, AZ - The 2012 Accenture Match Play Championship officially begins Wednesday, February 22nd at the Ritz Carlton Golf Club Dove Mountain. But before things get tee'd off, reigning champion and current number one player in the world Luke Donald met with the media Monday.
In 2011, Donald started off his wininng campaign here at Dove Mountain, beating Martin Kaymer in a week where he never once saw a full 18 holes. The win sparked an amazing run by Donald who posted fourteen top ten finishes on the PGA tour and ended up with money title for both the PGA and the European.
"It's certainly my best year by far," said Donald. "All starting here, winning this tournament really gave me a huge amount of confidence. I think because of that, it led up to a whole lot of the successes I had after the win."
So far the top four players in the world have committed to playing in the event (Donald, (2) Lee Westwood, (3) Rory McIlroy, and (4) Martin Kaymer). Tiger Woods, ranked 17th in the world is also expected to come. The only name of real note who has decided to pass is 11th ranked Phil Mickelson who is passing on the tournament in favor of a family vacation.
