Pima County praised for Tumamoc Hill plan

PIMA COUNTY, AZ (Tucson News Now) -

Pima County has been praised by the Federal Advisory Council on Historic Preservation for working with Indian nations in southern Arizona over construction of a communications tower on Tumamoc Hill.

Tumamoc Hill, west of downtown Tucson, is a significant site to the Tohono O'odham and other Native Americans. There is evidence that indigenous people lived there for more than 2,000 years.

The proposal by Pima County called for consolidating several buildings and towers into one replacement tower to reduce existing impacts and restoring the summit of the hill.

The county worked to resolve any direct or visual effects from the communications tower.

An agreement assures that the archaeological and cultural resources at the site will be protected throughout the project.

The agreement was sent to the Federal Communication Commission for signature. When signed, the project will move forward.
