TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) -
The Tucson Convention Center was jam-packed with students today for the ninth annual Math, Science and Technology Fun Fest.
The two-day event features more than 75 exhibit booths, giving students a chance to experience math and science in a hands-on way.
"At first I was like, 'I don't like math,'" said Sarah Martinez, a 5th grader. "Now I came here and I love math," she said.
More than 3,000 students are expected to show up over the two days the event will be set up at TCC. The Fun Fest is sponsored by Raytheon, IBM and Honeywell. It was started nine years ago by a Raytheon director who wanted to find a way to engage students at a young age in math, science and engineering.
Today students learned about things like the laws of motion and physics, as well as solar energy. But they learned in a way they wouldn't be able to in a classroom.
"It's hard to explain it when you're just looking in a text book and kids are like 'When am I ever going to use this?'" said Sharon O'Neal, the Fun Fest organizer, and a director at Raytheon. "We show them how what they're learning every single day, we actually apply it in our careers and our lives."
Registration for this event happens in the fall, and organizers say it fills up in just one day.
