TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) -
Friday was the start of a new beginning for the former Roberts Elementary School.
The Tucson Unified School District closed the school at 29th Street and Columbus due to low enrollment and district budget issues.
Now Pima Community College will be moving in, creating a mini mid-town campus in what is known as the 29th Street Corridor.
The deal is being described as a win-win-win situation.
That's for all three groups associated with it--Pima College, TUSD and the neighbors, many of whom lobbied hard to get PCC into the school building.
PCC broke ground at its new Roberts Center on Friday.
It will house the college's Adult Education Division and the Public Safety and Emergency Services Institute.
The institute trains EMT's, firefighters, paramedics and law enforcement officers.
PCC says it will spending $300,000 on renovations and parking lots.
The lease is for $70,000 a year.
PCC will pay for maintenance and utilities.
Classes are expected to begin in the new Roberts Center in September.
TUSD has closed nearly a dozen schools, and now says it has deals in the works to lease or sell all but three of the properties.
