GREEN VALLEY, AZ - As the race among congressional contenders heats up, one place Green Valley leaders want kept out of the political limelight is traffic medians.
According to Pima County administrative procedure, election campaign signs — even though temporary — aren't allowed in medians for safety and aesthetic reasons. Late in the week, there were several signs for GOP candidates Jesse Kelly and state Sen. Frank Antenori in county-owned medians along La Canada Drive near Desert Bell Drive and Esperanza Boulevard. Kelly and Antenori are among several Republican candidates in a special election primary April 17 to complete Gabrielle Giffords' term in Congress as well as represent the new CD2 in the November general election.
At the monthly meeting of the Green Valley Council's Board of Representatives on Thursday, President Stan Riddle said he had asked county authorities to remove signs in medians after last Friday. He said he had contacted both party offices in Tucson about the signs, apprising them of the deadline. Democratic candidates had not placed any signs here yet, according to their Tucson headquarters.
