SIERRA VISTA, AZ (Tucson News Now) -

It's a tune you might be familiar with.

Dr. Duane Chun is showing students how to hit the right note to the Stars and Stripes.

Chun is the band director at Buena High School in Sierra Vista, the same school he graduated from 30 years ago.

He grew up in a military family and can relate to his students.

"When I was in high school, I went to four different high schools.  The place for me was the band.  I feel welcome, at home right away.  And I try to set up the same atmosphere here for the students who are coming here," Chun said.

Chun calls the band room, a home away from home.

He motivates his students, builds their confidence and celebrates their success.

The Buena Marching Colts have performed on the Great Wall of China, at the Jefferson Memorial, and at Pearl Harbor.

These unforgettable field trips enriched their experiences and make their dreams come alive.

Junior Jacob Branderhorst said, "It's incredible what he does.  He touches so many lives.  Through his guidance and his professionalism.  He's just an amazing teacher overall."

Chun is also devoted to the community.

During the Monument Fire last summer, he rallied band students and parents to help set up a shelter area at the school.

Branderhorst said, "It was tough because you saw all this people coming and crying emotionally. But you feel good though. You feel good on the inside because you know you're doing something to help other people who are less fortunate."

"It was amazing how our community came together to provide help when needed," Chun added.

Students say they can count on him to be there for them.

Junior Christianna Silba said, "If anything ever happen to us, he would help us out.  He's like the father figure for everyone at the high school.  He's really great.  It definitely feels like a family."

And that family atmosphere is what inspires students to keep practicing.
