TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) -
Tucson police arrested 15 people and seized nine and a half pounds of heroin in a sting last week that concluded an investigation that began in June last year.
According to a press release from the Tucson Police Department, the Counter Narcotics Alliance includes local, state and national law enforcement personnel and works as part of the High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area Initiative.
Police say the people arrested belonged to an organization that was directly responsible for a large amount of heroin in the Tucson area.
According to the release, investigators identified high-volume suppliers of heroin in the area and a primary source of the drug entering the country from Mexico.
Seven search warrants were served on Feb. 15 and 16, resulting in the 15 arrests and seizure of what police estimate is up to $8 million-worth of heroin.
Each person arrested, including a 16-year-old boy, was charged with felony drug-related charges specifically related to the sale of narcotics, the transportation of narcotics, and the distribution of narcotics, and related to participation in a criminal syndicate.
