Is there really such a thing as a cure for the common cold? Well, maybe not yet -- but there are ways to help you heal faster and prevent those cold symptoms from lingering.
America Now wellness expert Peggy Hall shares her favorite home remedies to stop a cold in its tracks so you don't have to suffer for days on end.
1. Try a healing elixir: Boil some slices of ginger in two cups of water in a small saucepan for five minutes. Then make a "tea" with two tablespoons each ginger water, lemon juice and honey.
"You can also add a dash of cinnamon," explains Peggy. "Both the ginger and cinnamon are anti-inflammatory to help soothe a sore throat and to open up the nasal passages. Lemon is a rich source of Vitamin C to boost your immune system, and honey has an anti-viral effect."
Peggy recommends that you drink three cups a day until you feel better.
Caution: Ginger is a natural pain reliever and fever reducer. Never drink ginger tea with aspirin since they are both blood thinners.
2. Don't leave your used tissues lying around! Viruses can live up to 48 hours, so to make sure you don't infect others, flush the tissues. Also don't share cups, toothbrushes or towels with others.
3. Put three drops of hydrogen peroxide into each ear and let it sit for about 30 seconds. The ear, nose and throat are all connected, and hydrogen peroxide will work its way in to kill the pathogens. Hydrogen peroxide is inexpensive and easy to find in any drug store.
4. This is not the time to indulge in sweet treats. Sugar actually shuts down your immune system. Instead, focus on teas, soups and lighter foods so your body can turn its attention to healing instead of digestion, which takes the most amount of energy of any body function.
Peggy says the No. 1 way to stop a cold in its tracks is to rest, so your body can do its job of fighting off the virus.
"Why not make a cup of my healing elixir, put on your jammies and pop in a funny movie? You know what they say: Laughter is the best medicine," adds Peggy.
