Wildcat women hoops releases schedule

TUCSON, Ariz. – Head coach Niya Butts and the University of Arizona women's basketball released the schedule for the 2012-13 season, the University announced this week. The Wildcats will face 11 teams that advanced to the NCAA or WNIT tournaments last season.

UA will open its season with an exhibition contest versus Grand Canyon University at McKale Center. In the non-conference season, Arizona will also travel to Cal State Bakersfield, UNLV, North Texas, Long Beach State and New Mexico University.

In addition, the Wildcats will travel to the Bahamas for the Junkanoo Jam tournament Nov. 21-25, with games versus UTEP on Friday, Nov. 23 and Texas Southern on Saturday, Nov. 24.

Arizona will host Cal State Northridge, BYU, Weber State and Longwood University before opening Pac-12 Conference play versus Washington State in Pullman, Wash. on Friday, Jan. 4.

In the conference schedule, UA will also make trips to Washington (1/6), Utah (1/18), Colorado (1/20), UCLA (1/25), USC (1/27), Stanford (2/8), California (2/10) and Arizona State (2/24). The Wildcats will host Oregon (1/11), Oregon State (1/13), Washington (2/1), Washington State (2/3), Colorado (2/15), Utah (2/17), Arizona State (2/22) and will conclude the season hosting games against USC (3/1) and UCLA (3/3).

The championship portion of the schedule will start with the 2013 Pac-12 Tournament, held March 7-10 in Seattle, Wash. The first and second rounds of the NCAA Tournament will take place March 23-26, with the Final Four scheduled for April 7-9 in New Orleans, La.

In 2012, Stanford, California, BYU and UTEP all advanced to the NCAA Tournament, while UNLV, Oregon State, Washington, Utah, Arizona State, Cal State Northridge and Colorado competed in the WNIT.

The Wildcats return seven players, including senior Davellyn Whyte (Phoenix, Ariz.) and also welcome six newcomers to the squad.
