Tucson man charged with murder kills himself in jail

A man who was charged in the death of his infant daughter has apparently committed suicide while in jail.

Pima County Sheriff's Deputy Tom Peine tells Tucson News Now, corrections officers of the Pima County Sheriff's Department Adult Detention Center found 26-year-old inmate Jonathon Niles Kesterson unresponsive in his cell early Saturday morning.

According to Peine, Kesterson hung himself, and had a bed sheet tied around his neck.

Kesterson was in jail on charges of First Degree Murder in the death of his infant daughter, Vanessa Martinez.

The child's body was found buried in a desert area near I-8 in Eloy on April 14, 2012.

The girl's mother, Olivia Paige Martinez, 20, is also charged in her death.

Kesterson had been extradited to Pima County from San Diego, where he was arrested on an unrelated charge.

According to detectives, as Kesterson was being processed through the San Diego County Jail, he made comments to corrections staff regarding his daughter's death.

The Sheriff's Homicide Unit is now investigating Kesterson's death.
