An 18-year-old woman is dead, and two others injured, following a rollover crash near Gates Pass on Tucson's west side.
Pima County Sheriff's Deputy Renee Carlson tells Tucson News Now, at approximately 1:35 a.m., two vehicles were drag racing on East Gates Pass Road towards Speedway. Carlson says the people in the cars had been with a group of friends who were drinking at one of the Gates Pass lookouts.
Carlson says the driver of one of the cars has been identified as William Pina. In the car with Pina were four friends, including three women and one man. The second vehicle was occupied only by the male driver. He has not been charged at this time, as the investigation continues.
Investigators say Pina crossed the center yellow line in a no passing zone, and was going around the other car, when both drivers lost control, crossed left of center and went off the road. The cars hit brush and several tree before coming to a stop.
All three of the women in Pina's car were taken to the Trauma Center at University of Arizona Medical Center where one of the women, Marymar Martinez-Duran, 18, later died from her injuries. The other two women were listed in stable condition.
Pina was booked into the Pima County Adult Detention Center on charges of Manslaughter, Aggravated Assault, Endangerment, and DUI.
