South Carolina gets son of all-time leading scorer

Posted: Updated:

COLUMBIA, SC (AP) - South Carolina will soon have another McKie (MAK-ee) on the basketball court as the son of all-time leading scorer BJ McKie has committed to the program.

BJ McKie said on Twitter his son Justin chose the Gamecocks and new coach Frank Martin starting next fall. BJ McKie played at South Carolina from 1995 through 1999 and finished with 2,119 points, first on the school's career list. He is the Gamecocks only player in history to surpass 2,000 points.

Justin McKie is a 6-foot-4 guard who plays at Irmo High. He also received college interest from Memphis, Murray State and Winthrop among others.

BJ McKie is an assistant coach at Charleston Southern. He helped the Gamecocks to two NCAA tournaments and their only Southeastern Conference regular-season championship in 1997.

Dylan Thompson threw for three touchdowns and No. 24 South Carolina's maligned defense stood strong on a fourth-quarter goal line stand to topple No. 6 Georgia 38-35 on Saturday night.
No. 24 South Carolina's defense showed it's not nearly as bad as it looked two weeks ago - and maybe that No. 6 Georgia isn't the runaway favorite in the Southeastern Conference Eastern Division.

Georgia can establish itself as a top-tier beast if it gets by South Carolina this weekend - and USC would drop to 0-2 in the league with a loss. Tennessee travels to Oklahoma, where Coach Bob Stoops doesn't believe the SEC is all-powerful.
