Lesson lost if critique comes too late

There's uproar at the University of Arizona over an offensive editorial cartoon at the Daily Wildcat newspaper.

The cartoon shows a father violently threatening his son if he were ever to admit he was gay.  And the son turns the threat into a homophobic joke.  You can see the entire cartoon here.

The student editor of the Daily Wildcat has since apologized and the cartoonist has been fired.

But the question we've all been asking is why someone didn't stop the cartoon before it was published.  The paper does have a faculty advisor who critiques after the paper is published. And UA's position is that the university doesn't exercise editorial control - allowing students a First Amendment right to produce their own paper.

But these are students, and this is a teaching situation.

Think about it.  These are potentially future professional journalists. And yes, we're very glad they have a voice. But is this really how they want their voice heard? The university should reconsider its policy and have a faculty advisor working with the students.
