The Buena Colts are back in the post-season conversation.
1st-year head coach Ryan Scherling led the young squad to an 8-2 record and the team's first post-season berth since 1993.
The Colts are the only Division I team from Southern Arizona to qualify for the playoffs. Buena is a 12-seed and will travel to the face Mesa Red Mountain Friday night.
The Colts are led by an explosive offense and opportunistic defense.
With just one senior on the offensive side of the ball, Buena managed to roll up 4,060 total yards while averaging 43 points per game. They can beat you through the air or on the ground.
That ground attack is led by Dominique Drake, a transfer senior, from DeMatha High School in Baltimore, MD. Drake averaged almost 11 yards per carry this season while scoring 29 touchdowns and gaining 2,020 yards.
The Colts are a little more seasoned on defense where they have six starters with experience. Senior linebacker Thomas Romack intercepted four passes this season, three of which he returned for touchdowns.
Buena's only two losses were to the top-seed in Division I, Phoenix Mountain Pointe, 58-7 in Week 4 and Cienega in Week 2.
Yes it's been 19 years since the Colts had the pleasure of entertaining a Week 11, well it's been longer than that since they've won a playoff game. Ten years longer.
You have to go back to 1983 to find the last time Buena succeeded in the post-season, beating Cactus that year 35-28.
If the Colts can win their first playoff game in 29 years they will travel back the winner of Phoenix Brophy Prep and Chandler
