3 hikers ask for assistance in Catalina Mountains

ORO VALLEY, AZ (Tucson News Now) - Three hikers were assisted by search-and-rescue personnel Saturday in the Catalina Mountains near Catalina State Park.

A 41-year-old man, a 15-year-old girl and a 12-year-old boy started hiking on the Romero Trail to Mount Lemmon around 5:30 this morning, Pima County Deputy Tom Peine said.

They contacted the sheriff's department around 5:45 p.m., saying they needed assistance. One of teenagers were suffering from exhaustion, Peine said.

Peine said the group will hike back toward Catalina State Park in the morning after being located by a search airplane.

Volunteers will stay with the group tonight and continue rescue efforts in the morning.
