Obama & FDR only two Dems to win in Hamilton Co. twice

HAMILTON COUNTY, OH (FOX19) -

A major key to the President's victory was his win in Ohio and more specifically his win in Hamilton County.

The President received 52 percent of the vote to Mitt Romney's 47 percent.

The difference is a little less than 20,000 votes.

Of the ballots cast Tuesday in Hamilton County, Barack Obama beat Mitt Romney by less than 5,000 votes, but in early voting the President led by more than 14 percent.

Hamilton County used to be a Republican stronghold, but the county's Democratic party chairman, Tim Burke says the landscape has shifted. "This is a much more diverse county with a much larger African American population, we have a growing Hispanic population and quite honestly that benefits the Democratic party."

It was enough of a benefit to give Barack Obama back to back election victories which is something no Democrat has done since FDR in 1932 and 1936.

Xavier University political science professor Mack Mariani says Hamilton County Republicans haven't been bringing in new members. "The Republican party didn't do an effective job it appears of really bringing in those new voters and bringing in people who maybe never voted Republican before.

Mariani also says there's been a demographic shift. "Between 2000 and 2010 you had about 45,000 people moved out of Hamilton county," said Mariani.

Many of those people are Republicans who have moved to the suburbs of Butler and Clermont counties.

In our commitment to balanced news, FOX19 talked to the county's Republican Chairman, Alex Triantafilou, who says Republicans can no longer take elections for granted. "This county demographically is becoming more friendly to Democratic candidates," he said.

Triantafilou says there's a lesson to be learned. "We've got to do a better job of appealing to females, students and minorities. We have to do that. We have to have a message or a messenger who carries our principles," he said.

Voter turnout in Hamilton county was nearly 72 percent, but nationally fewer people went to the polls than in 2008 and political observers blame that on all the negative campaigning.
