Council race tied after wife doesn't vote for husband

WALTON, KY (FOX19) -

Katie McDonald is feeling bad these days because she didn't vote for her husband on Election Day.

It's not because they don't get along, but because she had worked four, 12-hour days prior to Tuesday. She also goes to nursing school and they have three children.

"She's getting just a few hours of sleep so when it came time for Election Day she said, 'Wake me up at 1 o'clock and I'll go up there and get it done,'" said Bob McDonald. "It was my job to wake her up, I didn't think it was going to come down to that one vote so I chose to let her sleep and get her rest and it came down to that one vote."

McDonald is a third generation owner of the Oak Creek Campground in Walton. He says his wife feels terrible and when he told her she couldn't believe it.

"She's like. 'you have to be kidding me' because she could tell by the look on my face what it was and I said, 'Yep, I should have woke you up.'"

Early voting in Kentucky is reserved for voters who know they are going to be out of town on Election Day.

"Kentucky does have a remedy for people who will be out of town on Election Day," said Kenny Brown, the Boone County Clerk. "It's called in-person or in-house absentee voting. We opened ours on Sept. 25 and had over 3,100 people take advantage of that."

Brown says in Kentucky there's no way you can just vote early because you want too, you have to actually be out of the county.

"They will just show their ID and sign a document that says they will be out of town that day and where they're going to be," he said.

The final vote count was 669 to 669. McDonald and Ballou tied for the sixth council seat.

"We're going to (decide it) with a coin toss," said Brown. "That's what Kentucky law says."

The coin toss will be done next week in front of Brown and a Boone County Magistrate.

It’s been a few months since the spot Bookman’s once called home on Campbell and grant was torn down. In another five to eight years, the empty dirt area won’t exist at all once grant Road gets widened.  Those who live in the surrounding neighborhoods want to make something of the space until then.
