Swearinger receives national defensive player of week honors

COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) -

University of South Carolina senior defensive back D.J. Swearinger was named the National Defensive Player of the Week by the Walter Camp Football Foundation.

Swearinger, a 6-0, 210-pounder from Greenwood, S.C., totaled a career-best 13 tackles (10 solo), including one for a loss, and added one interception which he returned 69 yards for a touchdown as the 12th-ranked Gamecocks defeated Arkansas, 38-20 Saturday at Williams-Brice Stadium.

Swearinger added one quarterback hurry as South Carolina improved to 8-2, 6-2 in the SEC.

The SEC swept the weekly awards, as Texas A&M quarterback Johnny Manziel was named the National Offensive Player of the Week for his efforts in a win over top-ranked Alabama.

This is the ninth year that the Walter Camp Football Foundation will honor one offensive and one defensive player as its national Football Bowl Subdivision player of the week during the regular season. Recipients are selected by a panel of national media members and administered by the Foundation.
