A furnace malfunction may have caused a fire to break out at a home in the 1900 block of East Silver Street Monday evening.
Tucson Fire crews responded to the home near Grant and Campbell around 6:25 p.m.
Two people lived in the home at the time of the fire. They were able to get out of the home without being injured.
A hole had to be cut through the roof to keep the fire from spreading through the attic and to let smoke escape from the house. Twenty-two firefighters worked to put out the flames.
The fire appeared to start in the wall of the home but the cause is still under investigation. The damage is estimated at $30,000.
Capt. Barrett Baker, with Tucson Fire, wants to remind people to have their furnaces checked. Baker said these homeowners did have the furnace checked before the fire.
