El Tour to have some behind the scenes changes

TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) -

El Tour de Tucson kicks off today with the Expo downtown.  As many as 9,000 cyclists could ride this weekend, and there are some last minute changes to the medical teams who may be helping them.

They are packing up, moving from their permanent office to a temporary office at the Tucson Convention Center, where the El Tour Expo starts this afternoon at 4 p.m.

There are slight changes in the rides this year, but one major change organizers did not plan on was Hurricane Sandy.

AZ D-Mat, the disaster medical team, was called up by FEMA to help recovery in New York.  Before the crews took off last week, they left plans and a few key logistics people to make sure everything goes off smoothly here in Tucson.  El Tour's director says it should be just like normal.

They will have replacements here to help the hundreds who need treatment for road rash or dehydration or anything else on Saturday.

Some behind the scenes changes that probably will not be noticed, and that is the way organizers intended it to be.
