TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) -
Hundreds of children die in Arizona every year. State health officials are putting
more emphasis on preventing deaths by suicide, drowning and maltreatment.
The Arizona Department of Health Services
released its child fatality annual report today for 2011.
It found 837 children died last year. That's a drop from the previous year, when
862 children died.
However, there was an up tick in the number
of suicides. State health officials believe most of the drownings could have been
prevented.
They found that 94 percent of drowning deaths in 2011 were
preventable.
