TEMPE, AZ (Tucson News Now) -
Starting next school year, Arizona State University will
be smoke free.
ASU is joining more than 800 universities across the
country that are 100 percent tobacco free. This goes into effect on Aug. 2,
2013.
The initiative was started by students and later
supported by the university staff council and the faculty academic senate.
Smoking is already not allowed inside buildings on
campus. But, the new policy will also prohibit smokeless tobacco and will apply
to smoking outside on any university property.
According to a press release from ASU, a 'community
enforcement' approach will be used. This is where the university community will
educate others. But, people who repeatedly violate the policy could face
sanctions.
